Audi developed a race version of their 90 sedan to compete in the 1989 IMSA GTO series. The car featured a tubular space frame and a 2.2L turbocharged 5-cylinder that made over 700hp. It featured Audi's famed Quattro all-wheel drive system and was driven by Hurley Haywood, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Walter Rörhl and Scott Goodyear. After an incomplete campaign which saw the cars dominate the races they entered (winning 7), Audi pulled out of IMSA in the US to focus on the DTM series in 1990.
