On July 11, 1987, Walter Röhrl piloted his Sport Quattro S1 to the top of Pikes Peak in 10:47:85, crushing Bobby Unser's year old record by almost 22 seconds, and securing Audi's third straight victory in the race. Built on a tubular space frame and weighing only 1,000kg with 600hp on tap, it was the pinnacle of 80's high-tech. Dual-clutch six speed transmission, three locking differentials, and a circulating-air system which allowed the turbo to maintain boost pressure at the high altitude all contributed to speeds of up to 122mph on the mountain.
